With the holiday season, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday right around the corner, what’s a modern new mama looking for one-of-a-kind gifts to do? It was delightful meeting Micha Forbes, Filipina Founder of Rocky River-based Luliluli – a newly launched collection of eco-chic, artisan baby bassinets. I met Micha at a Filipina Entrepreneur Toronto Networking Event. Her lovely Luliluli line – free of plastics and lovingly hand-designed with heirloom-quality sleep and play options for today’s modern parents in mind – delivers with a three-fold mission: 1) to care for our babies 2) to care for our Earth 3) to care for our communities

“When my youngest turned one, it was time to pass on or recycle her ‘baby stuff.’ I was overwhelmed by the amount of single-use gear and plastic in the baby space that we couldn’t re-purpose...”

As a self-described Military Kid turned Entrepreneur, Hospitality SaaS Sales Professional, and Girl Mom hailing from Hawaii, Forbes was inspired by her own Filipino upbringing and her family’s childhood “duyan”, a rocking bassinet native to the Philippines crafted from natural materials like rattan, hand-woven abacá (Manila hemp fibers derived from the banana plants,) and rope.

“The duyan kept baby sleeping as you rocked it ever so softly - no batteries and power needed. Just a caregiver’s love and supervision.

This is when Luliluli was born.”

Luliluli’s signature lightweight Moses Basket is made of all-natural dyes, leathers, and Elephant Grass native to Ghana. Partnering with Baba Tree Basket Company in Ghana for their Moses Baskets and artisans in Vietnam for their Changing Baskets, Forbes is planning future collaborations with Filipino artisans as Luliluli operations expand.

“When baby outgrows their Moses Basket or Changing Basket, it becomes home for their favorite stuffed animals and baby dolls.”

Sure to be a hit for your next baby shower gift or for yourself, Luliluli designs are perfectly chic and tailor-made for the modern mom who has it all – blending a modern aesthetic for today’s design-driven lifestyles and families who want artisan keepsakes for the next generation. Check out the latest Luliluli collections and their inspiring story.
